[R] How can I parse this string to extract just the number 11?

Hello,
Try the following.
string <- "\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"compliment-count profile\">11</span>"
gsub("[^[:digit:]]", "", string)
Then use as.numeric or as.integer.
