[R] how to extract characters from a character string

Match the start (^) followed by anything (.*)
to the question mark ([?]) or (|) a space ( ) followed
by anything (.*) to the end ($) and replace each
of those with nothing ("").

gsub("^.*[?]| .*$", "", "32?35.421 N")
