Study the help page?
split: character vector (or object which can be coerced to such)
containing regular expression(s) (unless 'fixed = TRUE') to
use for splitting.
is a big hint to try
> vv <- "whine$ts1"
> strsplit(vv,"$", fixed=TRUE)
[[1]]
[1] "whine" "ts1"
