[R] Mathematical Superscript on the y-axis of a plot

It's hardly *advertised*... 

Expressions still need to be syntactically correct and ther are no
operands to those '+' operators. Try

 plot(c(1:10), ylab= expression(x^"++"))

(the paste is unnecessary in your first example too)
