[ESS] trouble with accented character in the prompt windows when I evaluate a command

Not sure if your issue is the same, but it sounds similar. The
following worked for me:
(setq-default buffer-file-coding-system 'utf-8)
(setq-default coding-system-for-read 'utf-8)
(prefer-coding-system 'utf-8)
