This is historical. The intent of the DEFAULT style is to pick up the default
global values.
I agree that this ess-style + ess-default-style + ess-own-style-list +
ess-style-alist is damn confusing and non-standard.

Yeh. Why didn't we think of this on the last indentation rewrite? If DEFAULT and
RRR style are the same, then let's get rid of DEFAULT (keep it for backward
compatibility but don't mention in the docs) and stick with your nil proposal
which would be same as RRR in a clean state.
