You're not the only one. Now I can't reproduce.
Something very weird seems to be going on; this is the second issue I've
had with emacs/ess that has simply vanished after awhile (the first was
that it didn't seem to load at all).
To answer your other questions:

git from a few days ago, master branch. git log -1 says

Now no error. There is no error if I don't toggle first, and repeat
exactly the steps I did before.
The error I was getting was reproducible; I launched several new emacs
while I was testing.
