[ESS] Error: could not find function ".ess.help"

No no, ESSR is not a package anymore. It was only for a short period of
time. Now it is a bunch of code which we are attaching at runtime. After
long trial and deliberation we decided that the current state is an
optimal solution.

This is clearly wrong. What is the value of ess-etc-directory for you?

There is something wrong with make install indeed.
