[ESS] eldoc error: (void-function process-live-p)

I'm getting pretty constant complaints like the one in the subject as I do 
things in an .R file.  I got this particular error after hitting ctl-e to go to 
the end of the line.

I've been seeing this since I started using ess from git 
32f32452a04c1d08b401cdeee6dee5c28ff379e7 (June 28)
on Debian wheezy, emacs 23.4.1.
I do not have debian ess package installed.

Any ideas?  It's just a nuisance, as far as I can tell.
