The reason we have an open repository is so you can pull it.  SVN is
your friend if you want something that is one up from the latest
release.

And using GIT as your SVN client is wonderful, so that you can branch
as much as you want to.  That's what I do.

Of course, unlike the rest of ESS-core, most of my branches have been
years in the making, thanks to personal issues.  But that's just me.
