[ESS] .help.ESS gets appears only in certain directories

Well, you must have funny things happening in your R startup procedures.
index.search() is not a standard R function, so why are you missing it?

Try
       C-u M-x R --vanilla  [Enter]
to run 'R --vanilla'
and then you should see that things behave regularly, now?
