Thanks for that.  It works with my Fedora GNU Emacs 23.2.1 

I'm yet to try it on my Kubuntu installation, GNU Emacs 23.1.1
however, I did find a very odd thing on that installation AND on a
CentOS GNU Emacs 21.4.1.  Just the addition of the line

(setq ess-r-args-electric-paren t)

makes it work in a .R or .r file *PROVIDED THAT* it's a DOS file, and
not a unix file.  I fortuitously received a file from a Windows user
and I noticed that the args showed up fine.  It took me a while to
work out the distinguishing factor.

To a lisp aficionado that might be an indicator of something.
