[ESS] emacs doesn't load correctly

This is strange. It works fine with me in 23.1 -- can I suggest that you
try the following instead in your .emacs instead of what you have::
(add-to-list 'load-path (expand-file-name "~/ess-5.7.1/lisp/ess-site"))
(require 'ess-site)
and see if that makes a difference.
