[ESS] Backtick and font locking mystery

Thanks for that link.  I missed it at the time.

So it could have been going on since R-1.8.0 if ESS complied with R's
way of parsing input.  I've never had occasion to use that capability
of R, and that fact set me wondering....

Could it be possible to have the option of using the standard LaTeX
quote parsing syntax which bash and tcsh seem to use or the (now)
default R quote parsing?  It wouldn't matter if it could not be
switched on and off all that readily.  I wouldn't mind restarting ESS
on the occasion where I had a need to use the default instead of the
LaTeX style.  

Such an idea will unlikely be new and maybe it's been discarded long
ago, but I didn't see reference to it (though of course, I might not
have been using very smart search strings).  Perhaps I need to
understand a lot more about lisp in order to understand how it works,
but I'd like to have a go at understanding why that wouldn't be
possible.
