[ESS] pretty colors in bash

export PS1='\[\033[0;35m\]\h\[\033[0;33m\] \w\[\033[00m\]: '

I have the above line in my .bashrc to liven up my gnome-terminal.
When I open a shell in emacs, instead of the colors I see all the
command characters. Is there a way for emacs to display the colors or,
failing that, for me to indicate to emacs that the export PS1 should
be ignored?
