[ESS] strange behaviour of tab completion

I noticed that I was getting the same problem in regular comint mode,
running a shell. So I figured I had upset my Emacs, rather than
discovered a problem in ESS. Everything seems fine now after shutting
down emacs and restarting.
When in doubt, use brute force.
