Thank you, Ottorino.

I've now committed the change  s/gnuclient -q/gnuclient/
to the ESS sources,
after testing (for the ubuntu Xemacs I have available) that
indeed it makes a crucial difference.

My opinion still applies:

   Using fix() or edit() is "wrong in principle" 
   when working with ESS.
