[ESS] R starts slowly in ESS

Hi folks,

since upgrading to R 2.5 and ess-5.3.4 I observe the following odd
behaviour: R startup takes a long time (much more than starting it
from the terminal, that is why I think it might be an ess related
problem), and the after completion of startup a strange prompt is
displayed:

Any idea what is going on?
