[ESS] Getting history access from within an R session run by iESS

I am developing a library that automatically adds a footer to each plot 
drawn that includes the last command entered by the user. Apparently 
iESS prohibits R from saving history, so my library doesn't work from 
within iESS. This is described here:

Is there a way to re-enable history within R, not just the comint history?
