p.s. the other solution of course (as you mentioned) is to

mkdir /usr/share/xemacs/xemacs-packages/etc/ess/icons
mv /usr/share/.../ess/*xpm /usr/share/xemacs/xemacs-packages/etc/ess/icons

and then restart xemacs (and cross fingers)
