[ESS] ESS and setting Language for R

Hello

for reasons I don't exactly see through (I haven't changed the procedure
to install/update R), the introduction message and for instance the
result of the function "month.abb" are displayed in german since one of
the latest updates of R (the OS hasn't changed, SuSE Linux 9.0, kernel
2.4.21-273-default).

I searched the R-help mailing list archive and found, that setting
"LC_ALL="en"" should solve the problem. It does, when I start R in a
terminal. But when I start ESS
i.e. :
1. > export LC_ALL="en"
2. > emacs &
3. starting ESS with M-x R
the R process cannot be started and I get no error message (at least I
don't know where it is)

Can you tell me please how to set the language to english, when I work
with R and ESS ?

Is there a possibility, during installation for instance, to set the
language of R to english independent of the OS language ?

Thank you very much, Marcel
