[ESS] need first aid starting with ess on redhat linux

Hola!

I read most of the documentation I found, but still I cant get my xemacs 
21.4
on redhat 9 with ess (preinstalled) version 5.1.21
I can't get it into R mode, when typing M-x R it gets into Rd mode!

(Yes, I know that redhat 9 is old, but that the only linux I got to work 
on my
hardware so fare. Suse 9.1 definitely does'nt like the hardware).
