[ESS] help on ess-5.2.5

I installed the software R-2.0.0 on my Mdk 10.1. 
Installation was succesfull but I soon realised that I 
wasn`t able to recall previous commands. I read all the 
html documentation on this and perhaps the best is to 
install ESS  for using emacs as command line. So I 
downloaded and untar in the ESSDIR the ESS-5.2.5 archive. 
I got the following file :
/usr/bin/ESSDIR/ess-5.2.5/lisp/ess-site.el
If I got it well, I have to add somewhere in this file (or 
in the emacs system installation file?) the following 
line:

(require 'ess-site)   

Am I wrong?

I don`t know how to edit such thing, when I tape 
$ emacs /.../ess-site.el the buffer is "read only"!

What do you suggest me to do?
