[ESS] starting R on windows

I am running windows XP, R version 2.01, XEmacs 21.4, and ESS 5.2.3

I can't get R to start up with M-x R.

I have read John Fox' instructions and tried both his approaches: I have 
set the path to include the path to Rterm.exe, but still get the message:

No such file or directory, "c:\Program Files\R\rw2001\bin\Rterm.exe"
(or "Rterm.exe" if I change inferior-R-program-name)

Any advice would be most welcome.
