Just to clarify this recent change in ESS 5.2.0:

 > The principal change is that the *R* buffer now appears in its own
 > frame.  (Of course, you can turn that off if you want to.)

This should happen iff inferior-ess-own-frame is non-nil; its default
value is nil however, so this shouldn't be the problem.
