Those instructions have not been updated for the latest version of ESS
(5.2.1) which I just announced.  There may be trouble if you are trying
to combine them both.  But, 5.2.1 does incorporate alot of the 
additional
functionality, so maybe a vanilla re-install of ESS would be your best
bet to get everything working.
