Turn of syntax highlighting in R buffer

I use John Fox's configuration of xemacs+ess for R 1.9.1 on Windows 2000.

I find that interrupting a large amount of output is much faster if I have
syntax highlighting switched off in the inferior ESS buffer. I can do that
from the menus, but how do I set that to be the default at startup?
