Well, I wasn't saying that your init.el wouldn't work.  But, I was
reacting to Jan's error message which seemed pretty clear to me.
Perhaps, it depends on how ESS was installed.  If it was installed with
xemacs package tools, then your init.el would be correct.  However, if
ESS was installed manually, to get the latest and greatest, then a change
may be necessary.  If ESS was installed under the ~/.xemacs
sub-directory, maybe no change would be needed; but it would be
otherwise.
