Setting up ESS for Win2000 (using shell)

(I'll bring this side discussion up to the list for the benefit of any
archives.)
I tried what you suggested (starting a shell, then starting Rterm), and I
was able to start R, though (note that I still have John's addition in my
.emacs file, but that shouldn't come into play, should it?). However, in
this case when I try to create a plot, no graphics window appears, though
the shell seems to carry on undisturbed. For example,
> plot(rnorm(1000), rnorm(1000))
plot(rnorm(1000), rnorm(1000))
>
but no graphics window appears.
I also noticed that if I ask for help in R, a help window pops up behind
the emacs window. However, I can't interact with the window. If I hide
the emacs window, the help window doesn't refresh, so I can't see the text
in it (the hidden portion, when exposed, is blank). Meanwhile the R
process in emacs is running happily, so I can close Rterm, and when I do,
the help window disappears.
Any ideas?
By the way, I verified this behavior with John Fox's suggested line
commented out in my .emacs file.
Thanks for any help.

M-x shell
should give you a "DOS shell"... Try Rterm from that.
John Fox's solution might be more robust (but will break when you
upgrade).
