I have got the problem when I tried to use R-1.5.1 in xemacs-21.4.9 and
ess-5.1.24,
doing C-c C-l to load the function.
If there is a fix method, please let me know.

The error messsage:

Error in file(file, "r") : unable to open connection
In addition: Warning message:
cannot open file `c:shidaradata.insulashidara.f.go2.R'

The pc's information I am using (3 pc's I tested, the same error
appeared):

Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows Me
R.1.5.1 (default installation)
xemacs-21.4.9 (default installation, full package)
ess-5.1.24

My home directory is c:\shidara
My data directory is c:\shidara\data.insula
"f.go2" in the error message is the function I wrote, which works fine
in Rgui.
After double-clicking the xemacs icon on the desktop,
I typed in "M-x R", then the program showed the default starting R
directory "c:\Documents and Settings\shidara\desktop\ "
or other directory, which I changed to "c:\shidara\data.insula".
Then .RData in c:\shidara\data.insula was loaded successfully,
and using ls() or dir() worked fine.
I tried to edit my functon "f.go2", which came to the buffer correctly
by C-c C-d,
but when I used C-c C-l to load it, The above error appeared (by C-c `
).

Environment variables:
HOME c:/shidara/
R_HOME c:/shidara/

(HOME c:\shidara\
R_HOME c:\shidara\
had the same error)

c:\shidara\.xemacs\init.el :
(load "c:/xemacs/XEmacs-21.4.9/ess-5.1.24/lisp/ess-site")
(setq ess-source-directory
      (lambda ()
	(concat ess-directory "")))

ess-5.1.24 folder is placed in c:\xemacs\XEmacs-21.4.9
uncommented line in "ess-site.el" is:
(setq-default inferior-R-program-name "Rterm") ; msdos systems
