Sounds very cool.  Here's how I'd like to extend this -- I'd like to
insert it into ECB as a secondary window, where people could have a
list of environments, and click to expand the contents as needed
(sorted by type, or maybe better, a tree-view by type -- if you've
used Speedbar for Emacs-Lisp, C, or Java, you can imagine what I'm
thinking about).

So we'd have 2 trees -- a directory tree as well as an object tree --
I think this is in line for what Stephen intends, though the UI is
different in terms of functionality. 

(note that I've been slowly (yea, 9 months = really slow) getting
through semantic-bovinator code for lex'ing R and SAS, which would be
very useful for parsing and displaying objects in the file, along with
objects in the R environments).
