Summary: Changing value of "inferior-S+6-program-name"

Thanks to Rodney Sparapani, Patrick Connolly, Jonathan Baron and Rich
Heiberger for their help.

The problem was exactly as specified in the attached reply from Rich, i.e.
setting the "inferior ..." variables in ess-mode-hook and calling "S", or
"S+6" from a non ess-mode buffer. As soon I started calling S from an
ess-mode buffer everything worked fine. In fact most of my .emacs from Win
NT is working pretty good under Unix. The only thing I liked under NT and
didn't succeed in getting to work under Unix is the "desktop.el" which
remembers, at closing time, all buffers that were opened in the session and
the position point was at in those buffers and re-opens them and position
point at the same position at startup. Is this possible under Unix and
which package does this? Under NT I had Emacs-21.2, under Unix I have
Emacs-20.7.

Thanks again to all who responded,

Gérald

I have the line (using your path names)
(setq-default inferior-S+6-program-name
                             "/actuaria/splus_app/bin/Splus")
in my .emacs before the line
(load-library "ess-site")

I think what is happening in your current setup is that you placed
that line in ess-mode-hook, and then called M-x S+6 from a buffer that
isn't in ess-mode. Therefore the the redefinition didn't happen until
after you used the previous value.
