opening graphics devices using ESS under Windows NT

This is indeed the case. There are two S-PLus for windows interfaces
available, read the help files in /doc; one allows for graphics, and
the other doesn't. Unfortunately, the "natural"[1] one is the one that
doesn't allow for graphics.
