This is a guess. Instead of sending the long command to R using C-c C-n,
try picking it up with the mouse and dropping it into the *R* buffer.
The idea I am working on is this. ESS is waiting for the prompt and holds
up emacs until it sees the prompt. If you use the mouse, rather than the
emacs command to send the line over, then emacs is no longer waiting.
I can't think of any reason why there should be a shift in behavior from
emacs 20 to emacs 21, yet this is still the next step I would take in
trying to debug this.
