I use string-rectangle, have bound it to C-c >
I use it all the time. Can use it to insert arbitrary strings,
e.g. spaces, tabs, # for S comments, ...

C-c > runs the command string-rectangle
which is an interactive autoloaded Lisp function in `rect'.

Replace rectangle contents with STRING on each line.
The length of STRING need not be the same as the rectangle width.
