Absolutely - the very reason for me wanting to use ESS. I should have
said that I reinstalled XEMacs as the Cygwin version, which sorted out
my problems with the native windows version.
I had only used the Windows version of R up to now, using the Rgui
application, which doesn't require the user to decide on their R source
directory. So I was a little confused by the path that appeared at the
bottom line of the XEMacs window and just pressed <Enter>.

Now a question for you:
What is the difference between what you are seeing as two versions of
ESS?
There is only one version of ESS and it runs on Unix, Windows, Mac.
