compile error

Dr Rossini,
I typed the  (load "/cbl/schen/tmp2/ess-5.1.21/lisp/ess-site") in a emacs buffer and then typed control-j. It killed the emacs.

Yikes!  Can you try typing 

 (load "/cbl/schen/tmp2/ess-5.1.21/lisp/ess-site") ^j

in the *scratch* (lisp evaluation) buffer within Emacs and see if it core-dumps
there?   (^j = control-j, which evaluates the line).

I.e.:

1. Remove the line from your .emacs file
2. start emacs
3. type what I said (usually the startup screen/initial buffer is the
   *scratch* buffer).
