How to start ESS?

Did you save this file after you edited it?  At this point you should
also be able to do:

M-x load-file <enter> init.el
(where <enter> is the enter/return key).

    zhu> If I start XEmacs with a source file with the ending ".R", I
    zhu> get a kind of syntax highlighting.

Does the modeline (at the bottom of the buffer) have "ESS" in it?
