ess-remote

I am using the ess package downloaded as a package from xemacs.org. I
am on xemacs 21.4 from April 2001. It came with Redhat 7.3. When I run
ess-remote, things seem to start up ok. However, I cannot send buffers
to be evaluate in the ess process (I am running R1.6.1 remotely on a
linux box). I get this error

Wrong type argument: stringp, nil

About one line of the file appears to be evaluated. Here is the
transcript of my ess-remote session if that helps. Thanks in advance, Bud
