Something else is going on that is giving you that Signal 127.
Try two things

1. does that telnet work from the standalone msdos prompt or the
standalone bash prompt.

2. Try it from xemacs without any of your personal files, that is using
      xemacs --vanilla
then M-x shell
then
    telnet other machine.
