Creeping along with ESS

Hi all,

I'm still trying to get a remote call going to R.  Thanks to Rich's 
suggestion I've got a little further along the road, but when I try

M-x S+elsewhere

I get

$ options(STERM='iESS', editor='gnuclient.exe', pager='gnuclientw.exe')
Syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")
$


Trying to telnet seems to connect, but after being prompted for the 
password nothing happens.  Does anyone have any advice?
