object name completion in Windows NT

I've tried to get object name completion using ESS under both NTemacs and
Xemacs running on Windows NT.  At the command line, completion works fine
(agonizingly slowly under NTemacs, satisfactorily quickly under Xemacs).
However, in either program, I can't get completion to work in the minibuffer
(for example, when I'm telling it what function to edit after ctrl-c
ctrl-d).  Completion in the minibuffer works fine under plain emacs on my
linux installation.
