R won't get interactive

I've succesfully installed ESS version 5.1.16 on a Linux PC and
on HP-UX. But I can't get it to work on a Linux Alpha machine.

I've tried ESS 5.0, 5.1.16, 5.1.18
I've tried with Emacs and XEmacs

I keep running in the same trouble. Apparently, when I try to
run R from ESS, R seems to think it is doing batch
processing. First it won't run, complains:

Fatal error: you must specify `--save', `--no-save' or `--vanilla'

When I specify one of these, R runs, but I don't get a
prompt. And as soon as I make a syntax error, R exits. R also
won't display graphics on X, but writes to a PostScript file,
even though DISPLAY is set.

I guess this is not a ESS problem, but another Emacs
problem. But perhaps you can suggest how to fix it.
I get the same problem when I run R from a shell in Emacs or
XEmacs. I start a shell with Alt-X shell RET, and then start R
from the shell prompt in Emacs. When I do a ps in another
window, I get:

25009 pts/4 S 0:00 emacs -nw
25027 ? S 0:00 \_ /bin/bash -i
25040 ? S 0:00 \_ /opt_local/opt/pk/lib/R/bin/R.bin --no-save

The shell inside Emacs is acting weird, I get all commands I
type copied.
