you're working late, so you might be quite serious.

you can just create a file called '.emacs', and stick that line in 
and save the file.  there are lots of interesting things you can also 
do if you learn a bit of lisp, but just that line should be what you 
need to run r-mode.

the .emacs file is used to customise your emacs when it starts up. in 
your case, it's to load rmode in some way (I don't know the line, I'm 
not using the mode actively anymore, but will again in the future).
