question about S+elsewhere

Prof. Heiberger,

Thanks for the response. My guess is that if I set up SSH, I can probably
eliminate the timeout and the password problems.

BTW, has the object name completion for R in Windows been fixed? I
remembered this used to take about 2 minutes the first time, and quite a few
seconds in subsequent use. I was pleasantly surprised that with ESS 5.1.19
and XEmacs 21.4.3, the completion works about as fast as on Linux/Unix.

I have another problem, and it is probably specific to XEmacs (since I have
not had this problem with NTEmacs 20.7): When I start S+ from Xemacs with
the dde connection, XEmacs seems to be passing the wrong path for S_PROJ to
Splus: I get a dialog box saying the directory can not be found, and the
path shown in the dialog box is the right one, except all "/" or "\" had
been stripped. Any idea how I can fix this?

Thanks again.

Andy

Here are specifics that work for me. I don't think they can be generalized
and packaged.

1. prompt. Type C-g and then move then manually move the cursor to the
end of the line. That usually works.

2. when the elsewhere server prompts you for the password, use
 M-x send-invisible
before typing the password itself.

3. Before starting S, type
      stty -echo nl
at the unix prompt. The -echo turns off the echo, the nl turns off the
newline that you see as ^M.

4. object name completion should work. does it work correctly for you
using an older version of S-Plus? I am thinking that the problems here
are related to the object name completion problems with S-Plus 6 that
we have been discussing on this list.
