ESS with S-PLUS 6 for Windows

Dear ESS community:

I am experiencing some difficulties in trying to use ESS 5.1.16 with S-PLUS
6 for Windows, Release Candidate 3.  My OS is NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6.  

My goal is to use SP6 for Windows without the Windows GUI.  Insightful's
experimental "winjava" library allows one to open a graphics device from a
console "sqpe" process with a java.graph() command.  This works well if I
use a DOS (oops, meant to say windows "command" window):

> java.graph() # device appears

> usa()  # favorite map appears

Now if use a shell from Emacs with Cygnus bash, the above sequence works OK.
*However*, the standard S prompt is mysteriously lost from the beginning of
the session:

library(winjava,T)

Now if I launch an inferior sqpe process instead (M-x sqpe), things launch
OK,  but

*	The prompt is still missing; and

*	If I type in

library(winjava,T)

java.graph()

No device or error messages appear.

Commands are being recognized, though, if I next submit for example,

graphsheet()
Problem in .C("S_axum_device",: Can only be run from S-PLUS graphical
client., while calling subroutine S_axum_device 
Use traceback() to see the call stack
Warning in .C("S_set_device",: No such device, setting device to next device

I also tried analogous commands with R v1.3.0, rterm.exe, and the prompt " >
" shows and windows() works as expected.

I could not see anything peculiar with environment variables, or site-start,
or .emacs files, etc, but I do not have good understanding of customizing
Emacs.

Any insights or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time
