ESS 5.1.17 - complete-filename?

Dear all,

since ever I did't get the filename completion work within
R-1.1.1 and ESS-5.1.17 (also 5.1.13/14) under xemacs (21.1).
E.g. when I type:

> "/home/

and then press <TAB> the following message appears:

last thing matched was not a buffer

I solved the problem half-heartedly with 
(global-set-key [(shift tab)]  'comint-dynamic-complete-filename)
in my .emacs-file.
Is there a more elegant solution?
