Installing ESS from rpm

Hello,

I have been attempting to install ESS 5 from a Red Hat rpm to a Mandrake 7
Linux. On pressing M-x I get an error message stating that the S+3 file
can't be loaded, if I then press R enter the error message (obviously)
confirms that the R file can't be loaded. I assume that ess-site.elc is
therefore loading up OK (and that the .emacs has been set correctly).

I can't find the uncompiled ess-site.el to check whether the directory trees
I am using look sensible. I am using XEmacs compiled and supplied in rpm
format specifcally for Mandrake and wonder whether I should really compile
my own ESS.

I apologise for wasting bandwidth if I have missed something obvious. ESS
works here under MS Windows but I miss it at home. Thanks for any advice.

Best
