I am attempting to install ESS 5.1.9 on Solaris with Emacs 19.33.2. I downloaded the ESS-5.1.9.tar.gz in a directory named ESS, extracted the files (they unpacked into a subdirectory ess-5.1.9), changed to directory ess-5.1.9 and typed make. The following was the resulting output:

> make
emacs -batch --no-site-file --no-init-file -l ./ess-comp.el -f batch-byte-compile ess-vars.el
Symbol's function definition is void: functionp
*** Error code 255
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `ess-vars.elc'
Current working directory /emc/glynn/ESS-5.1.9/ess-5.1.9/lisp
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `all'

I did not make any changes to any file before running make.
Any help as to what this error message means or how I should proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill Glynn
