hooks for specific statistics packages

Yes. We've not thought about it.
Actually, it would be easy to do in the current setting -- I (we) just
need to add the hooks via "(run-hooks 'R-mode-editing-hooks)" in the
definition of R-mode in essd-r.el, for example, and make it clear.
In fact, it would be easy to then customize via M-x customize :-).
Let me (we? ESS-core, anyone can solve this one...) think about how to
do it, but we've got an important visitor visiting Seattle who'll take
up a bit of my time the next few days :-).
